Pearl Bailey...By Request Begins November 19th

A Night in the Life of this Legendary Songstress and "Ambassador of Love" Returns to MetroStage for the Holidays

Producing Artistic Director Carolyn Griffin is pleased to announce that Pearl Bailey...By Request, the smash hit that premiered last year at MetroStage, is returning for the holidays and will be in performance November 19-December 20. It will star Roz White, who conceived of the show and co-wrote it with Thomas W. Jones II. Ms. White, who shares a birthday with Pearl Bailey, is a Washington DC native and is a graduate of Duke Ellington School for the Arts and Howard University. She has appeared at MetroStage in Three Sistahs, Bricktop, Two Queens One Castle and Cool Papa's Party, all written and directed by her collaborator and MetroStage Associate Artistic Director, Thomas W. Jones II. She won a Helen Hayes Award for her role in Mr. Jones' Bessie's Blues (Studio Theatre). William Hubbard, who played Fats Waller in MetroStage's Bricktop, and won a Helen Hayes Award for Crowns (Arena Stage), will join Ms. White as a special guest playing Hot Lips Page, a singer heard on many of Pearl Bailey's albums. Mr. Hubbard has composed, music directed and performed in many MetroStage productions, including Harlem Rose, Three Sistahs, All Night Strut, Bricktop, Two Queens One Castle and Cool Papa's Party. Mr. Hubbard most recently music directed Black Pearl Singing at Ford's Theatre and Three Sistahs in Phoenix.

Music arrangements and music direction for Pearl Bailey...By Request are by William Knowles, who has music directed and performed in many of MetroStage's musical productions including Bricktop, Cookin' at the Cookery and Cool Papa's Party. He will be performing with MetroStage regulars Yusef Chisholm on bass, Gregory Holloway on drums and David Cole on guitar. Pearl Bailey...By Request was most recently performed in Atlanta and will travel to Milwaukee Rep's Stackner Cabaret in January for an extended run.

Pearl Bailey recorded "16 Most Requested Songs" for Columbia Records and was paired with many musical luminaries of the day, including Frank Sinatra. Ms. White has chosen many of these numbers ("St. Louis Blues", "Baby It's Cold Outside", and "The Hucklebuck" to name just a few) and built an evening of marvelous music and memorable stories in her new tribute to Pearl. Although a star of stage and screen, Pearl's gifts were best savored in the nightclub, where she was able to establish a marked degree of intimacy with her audiences.

In Pearl Bailey...By Request, Ms. White is accompanied by a four piece band, recreating Pearl's musical magic as the audience is transported to a late1940's nightspot.

Born Pearl Mae Bailey, March 29, 1918, in Newport News, VA, Pearl Bailey grew up in Virginia, Washington, DC and Philadelphia becoming an acclaimed vocalist, actress, and irrepressible show business personality. She began her career as a dancer, but in 1938 she won a singing contest at Harlem's Apollo Theatre and was subsequently featured with big bands led by Noble Sissle, Edgar Hayes, Cab Calloway and Cootie Williams. She made her Broadway debut in St. Louis Woman (1946), and in 1952 married drummer/bandleader Louis Bellson, with whom she performed thereafter. She appeared in many films including Carmen Jones (1954) and St. Louis Blues (1959, with Eartha Kitt, Mahalia Jackson and Nat King Cole). She won a Tony Award for the all-black production of Hello Dolly! (1967-69, 1975) and hosted her own television variety show (1970-71). She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 1971, was named the "Ambassador of Love" by Richard Nixon and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1988 from Ronald Reagan. She earned a B.A. in theology from Georgetown University in 1985. The autobiographies chronicling her remarkable life are The Raw Pearl, Between You and Me and Talking to Myself.

With twenty-three years of professional experience Roz White has performed with such nationally acclaimed artists as a Yolanda Adams and spent three years as lead vocalist at clubs on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Returning to DC after Hurricane Katrina, she has been appearing on DC stages and around the country ever since. As an actor, Ms. White has made versatility and adaptability her trademark. In addition to her work at MetroStage her resume includes roles she created, such as Alberta Hunter in MetroStage's Bricktop, Hannah in the hit musical Rejoice by Cheryl West (Jar the Floor), and other noted roles that include Effie White in Dreamgirls (national tour), Mahalia Jackson in Mahalia, and "Miss Adelaide" in the classic musical Guys and Dolls. In her new tribute, Pearl Bailey...By Request, Ms. White merges anecdotes, monologues, and Pearlie Mae's infectious, sultry tone with ballads, standards, and swing numbers.

What the critics are saying about Pearl Bailey...By Request

" [Roz] White soft-pedals it herself, gracefully mimicking Bailey's trademark low, mellow tones while dropping wisecracks between the lyrics. The patter is nearly nonstop, with White-as-Bailey punning and joking about everything from love to footwear. (Her fancy heels are too tight: 'These are just my one-hour shoes,' White explains as she kicks them off for a spell.)

This sort of laid-back bio-cabaret has become the house specialty at MetroStage, and White -- who conceived of the show and wrote the slim book with Thomas W. Jones II -- keeps Bailey's professional face front and center. The black entertainer's life and times are skimmed, not explored, so comments about her marriage to white drummer Louis Bellson or winning the Medal of Freedom feel like tossed-off facts.

Luckily, this drive-by info (70 minutes, directed with warm efficiency by Shirley Basfield Dunlap) comes with a nice songbook. White draws extensively from Bailey's '16 Most Requested Songs' album, including earnest versions of the Bailey signature ballads 'Tired' and 'Here You Come With Love.' The four-piece band onstage swings lightly (drummer Greg Holloway uses brushes more often than sticks), and while the musicianship is generally fine, White's Bailey is more vibrant whenever she partners with more than just a tune..."

"If you enjoy live R&B/jazz and are looking for an entertaining musical evening out, the MetroStage world premiere production of Pearl Bailey . . . By Request admirably fills the bill. If you fondly remember Pearl Bailey and her music, you are doubly blessed. On the other hand, if you do not have much familiarity with Pearl Bailey and want to understand why she was one of the most beloved entertainers of the twentieth century, the show only provides a partial glimpse into this unique lady.

Pearl Bailey . . . By Request is set in a nightclub and is based upon a 1950’s album of Pearl Bailey’s most requested songs from her Columbia Records era. As a cabaret performance, the show is an unqualified success. Roz White is a terrific performer. Area theatre fans who have seen her in shows like Two Queens One Castle and Three Sistahs know that the lady can sing. Earlier in her career she performed as Effie in a national tour of Dreamgirls, a role that help you appreciate the fact that she has seriously powerful pipes..."

Training for a Lifetime for the Role of Pearl Bailey

"Ever since singer-actress Roz White found out she shared a birthday (March 29) with Pearl Bailey, she's felt a kinship with the legendary performer. 'I thought, wow, we look alike . . . so I started reading her books and learning her quotes,' White says. Bailey, who died in 1990, also spent part of her childhood in Washington, where White grew up.

'She could work a ballad like the best of 'em. She just was the completely well-rounded entertainer. . . . She had it all,' observes White, who is starring in a cabaret-style salute, 'Pearl Bailey . . . by Request,' at MetroStage in Alexandria tomorrow through Nov. 9. The show is an expanded version of a piece White performed at THEARC in Anacostia..."

Pearl Bailey Cabaret Added To MetroStage's Fall Schedule

Pearl Bailey...By Request
October 16 - November 9, 2008

Born Pearl May Bailey, March 29, 1918, in Newport News, VA, Pearl Bailey was a polished vocalist, actress, and irrepressible show-business personality. She began as a dancer and won an amateur contest in Philadelphia (1933), which led to work in touring shows. In 1938 she won a singing contest at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre and was subsequently featured with big bands led by Noble Sissle, Edgar Hayes, Cab Calloway, and Cootie Williams, with whom she recorded in 1945. She starred in the Broadway musical St Louis Woman (1946), and in 1952 married the drummer-bandleader Louis Bellson, with whom she performed thereafter. She appeared in many films, television, and stage shows, including Carmen Jones (1954) and Hello, Dolly! (1967–69), and she hosted her own television variety show (1970–71). Her autobiography, The Raw Pearl, was published in 1968.

Some of the most productive years for the inimitable Pearl Bailey were those she spent recording for Columbia Records, between 1945 and 1950. Columbia paired the singer with other luminaries of the day, including Frank Sinatra. It was at Columbia Records that Pearl recorded "16 Most Requested Songs." Roz White has chosen 15 of those numbers and built a delightful evening of laughter and great music in her new tribute, Pearl Bailey…By Request. On stage her ample figure, often swathed in fur and sparkling with rhinestones and jewels, was a magnet for audience attention as she tossed off a ballad in throwaway style. In films, she was celebrated chiefly for two roles – Maria in Porgy and Bess and Frankie, a roadhouse girl, in Carmen Jones. But Miss Bailey’s gifts were best savored in the nightclub, where she was able to establish a marked degree of intimacy with her audiences. In Pearl Bailey…By Request, accompanied by a four piece band, Roz becomes Pearl as the audience is transported to a late 1940’s night spot and is set to witness the musical magic Ms. Bailey made her claim to fame!

Performer Roz White is a vocalist and actor with 22 years of professional experience and training. Ms. White is a Washington DC native, who was reared in the district’s wards 7and 8, and educated in DC Public Schools. Born Rosalind T. White, March 29, 1970, Roz graduated from both Duke Ellington School of the Arts, and Howard University (BFA Musical Theatre ’94). Roz has worked as a backing/featured vocalist with many artists and producers, including Yolanda Adams (Oprah Winfrey Show, American Music Awards, The Experience-2001 Elektra Records, etc.), Gerald Levert, Grayson Capps, Rickey Minor, Ed ‘Gusto’ Greene, and Jevetta Steele. Roz spent three years working as a lead vocalist at clubs such as ‘The Famous Door’ on Bourbon Street in New Orleans as well as other venues throughout the Gulf Coast. Roz has two Billboard Magazine acclaimed dance singles to her credit: "Bad For Me" (Bullet Records) and "A Little More Love" (Slip n Slide UK) which have become a part of vintage house mixes both in Europe and the US.

As an actor Roz has made versatility and adaptability her trademark, boasting a resume that includes roles she created, such as Hannah in the hit musical Rejoice by Cheryl West (Jar the Floor), and bringing the story of Alberta Hunter to life in Bricktop, written and directed by Thomas W. Jones II. Roz won a Helen Hayes Award for her portrayal of Rhythm in Mr. Jones’ Bessie’s Blues. Other noted roles include Effie White in Dreamgirls (National Tour), Mahalia Jackson in Mahalia, and "Miss Adelaide" in the classic musical Guys and Dolls. In her new tribute, Pearl Bailey…By Request, Roz merges anecdotes, monologues and “Pearlie Mae’s” infectious, sultry tone with ballads, standards, and swing numbers. The audience can expect to enjoy a fulfilling evening of entertainment, as Roz White captures Pearl Bailey’s legendary ability to create brilliantly candid pictures with a song!
